About

The Great Adventure Lab is an after-school science enrichment program that runs in 50+ schools in the D.C. area. We’ve taught thousands of kids how to write their first robotics programs or video game programs (or both!). This is the start of our fourth school year!

We do it all with SMALL class sizes (adult-student ratio = 6:1) and highly skilled teachers, many of whom have or still work as scientists or engineers. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN for the next generation. Kids leave our classes demanding MORE!

You can read all about our classes and birthday parties on our website: http://www.thegreatadventurelab.com. Our site includes plenty of reviews, photos and links to videos from our classes!

We are an LLC based in Silver Spring, MD. We are fully insured and our instructors have passed background checks including FBI and state fingerprinting.

Here are mini-descriptions of our Spring 2014 offerings at Murch ES.  Please follow links for complete details, including photos! Room numbers TBD. We will send you a welcome email several days before the first class.

These activities are not sponsored by, associated with, or endorsed by MCPS or Montgomery County Government.

LEGO ENGINEERS   Here's a full description of the class

GRADES 1-2, no exceptions.

Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm

Meeting dates: April  22, 29, May 6, 13, 20, 27 and June 3

Using Lego Education’s Simple Machines set, we’ll learn the mechanical engineering concepts behind levers, gears, pulleys and more.  Each week we’ll build a new project.  Get ready for a wild amusement park ride, a go-cart and of course... a catapult. After learning the engineering concepts and building the machines, we encourage students to improvise on their designs, just like we do in our robotics classes!

Areas of exploration include: engineering, simple machines, and physics.  1 instructor, 1 aide, seven 60 min meetings, once per week, $120 per student, min 11/ max 12 students.

Young Engineers

GRADES 3-5  - Students may not repeat this class.  Students must be in specified grade range.

Wednesdays 3:30-4:30pm

Meeting Dates: April 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4

Lots of people follow recipes for 30 years and still can’t cook. We don’t want that to happen to your budding engineers. In this class, kids will learn basicengineering concepts, while designing and building cool things like bridges, egg drops and … working catapults that are almost as large as your child!

Class will meet indoors but we’ll periodically venture forth outside to test out what we build. Each kid takes home his/her own catapult.

Areas of exploration: engineering, physics., 2 instructors, Eight meetings, 60 minutes once a week, $140 plus $30 materials fee per student. Min 11/ Max 12 students.
